TRAVEL NOTES // HOBART - ADELAIDE

Hobart

Markets, steps, rain and conversations about drought. Hobart was where we slowed down. When the rain came, rather than escaping it, we stopped and watched it. We wandered more, planned less and paid attention to the weather, the old buildings and the small things we might otherwise have walked past. Hobart reminded me that inspiration sometimes requires doing absolutely nothing except noticing.

Adelaide

Wine, cheese, glass, leather and history.

Adelaide revealed itself as a city of craftsmanship. Watching glass being worked at JamFactory, visiting the R.M. Williams factory, walking through Adelaide Oval and seeing the old machinery and traditions that have survived around it.

There was a sense that making things properly still matters here. And then there was the 107-year-old scoreboard shed. Timber, dust, old machinery, oil and a century of people. I think the smell of that room will live with me forever.

Which, for a trip about where inspiration comes from, feels rather perfect.
