A PERFUME HOUSE
FOR HOME FRAGRANCES.

Coveted fashion houses throughout history have had an olfactory department within, a hub of passionate perfumers fervently translating the brand into scent.

Today, we’re bringing that same obsession to our range of home fragrances, from luxury scented candles and reed diffusers to room sprays so delicate you might be tempted to wear them.

Handmade Small Batch

A SMALL BATCH, HANDmade,
somewhat PERSONAL CREATIVE PROCESS.

Olfactory Department home fragrances are entirely handmade in Australia, and are shipped straight from the base of our Head Nose (more on him below).

Before they reach your home, each scent goes through a rigorous six-step creative process from the place and time of inspiration to the initial mood boards and rounds of rounds of refinements it we get it just right.

Inspired by our travels, musings and day to day moments, we’re concocting a fragrance to conjure memories you never knew you had.

A note from IAN, HEAD NOSE.

Firstly, a warm welcome to Olfactory Department, the perfume house I’ve built to satisfy my passion for travel and scents. Some have told me that it’s an interesting one.

I hate talking about myself, but here goes. I’m a 40-something little boy lost, very much adapted to the nomadic lifestyle. Having lived and worked around the world for most of my life, I’ve decided to settle in Australia and create something longer lasting.

From a young age, I travelled the world in tow of my mother. We travelled most school holidays, and to most destinations. And well, that transpired into my adulthood. From Sydney to London and back a few times, to the Gold Coast and Perth, and finally to the islands off the coast of Australia. I’ve spent a majority of my time in Far North Queensland (and who wouldn’t?).

Every time I returned from a trip, my grandmother encouraged (forced) me to create a scrapbook of all the memories I collected. This practice of saving, remembering and creating has stayed with me, and is actually how I build my best scents for Olfactory Department.

Using my childhood scrapbooking skills, I create a mood board of colours, people, places and spaces. Once I’m happy and have sat on it for a bit, that’s where the real play begins. I start by creating 4 to 6 basic scents, followed by a narrower 3 to 5. After that, it's like building Lego until I get one or two that are right. This is when I perfect the final scent by adding and sometimes taking out what doesn’t work.

I hope you love your Olfactory Department fragrances. Should there be anything furtherwe can do to make your experience with us more comfortable, pleasedo not hesitate to contact our department directly.

Warmest Regards,
